Simon: Like many people, I like to travel and there are many ways you can travel, uh, many forms of transportation. Probably the main three that I wanna talk about now are by car, by train and by airplane. Now each of these forms of transportation have there pros and cons. Would you agree?
Friend: Indeed, I would.

Simon: So, what's your favorite form of transportation, of those three?
Friend: I would have to say the automobile.
Simon: Um, well, tell me some of the, the pros of traveling by car.
Friend: That would be mainly freedom. Freedom of movement. Freedom of stop. Freedom to go. Freedom to, yeah, freedom basically.
Simon: OK, uh, what about a train? What are the advantages of being of a train?
Friend: Ah, I would say, good views of the countryside. You can move around on a train. You're not stuck in a car. You can go for a cigarette. You can get something to drink. You can go to the bathroom, which you cannot do in a car.
Simon: OK, and let's talk about the airplane. Why, what are some of the advantages of flying?

Friend: There's nothing I can say bad about a train, except, yeah! Train's good.
Simon: OK!
Friend: Price!
Simon: Yeah, price, in many countries train travel is expensive. Uh, we are traveling in Japan, so the train is very fast and efficient, however, it is expensive, and another thing is, you're confined by schedule and things like that. How about the disadvantages of a car?
Friend: Ah, pollution, accidents, cost, yeah, cars can be expensive, too, maintenance, gas.
Simon: And how about the plane?
Friend: The disadvantages of a plane. The lack of view, and yeah, that stale, stale air.
Simon: Oh, yeah, also, I could sort of say the fear factor, yeah, and being confined to a small space. Yeah, that's it.

Todd: So, Mini, your country, Sri Lanka, is a very popular tourist destination. Can you talk a little about costs? Like how much does it cost to have a nice vacation in Sri Lanka?
Mini: It's a very cheap place to have a vacation, so for example if you have... your budget is around 50,000 yen in terms of rupees around 45,000 rupees, you can have a good vacation. You can have a good hotel. You can have good food. You can shop as well — by clothes and all the stuff and go around the country as well.
Todd: That's pretty cool. So, how much is a nice hotel, like a five-star hotel?
Mini: For one day, it's around 10,000 yen. Around 9,500 rupees.
Todd: Right. So 10,000 yen. OK, so that's pretty cheap. That's about 100 dollars I think. Right? One hundred U.S. dollars? So, a five-star hotel, you're talking about beautiful room, nice swimming pool, nice facilities, everything.
Mini: Everything is there, and it's near the beach as well.
Todd: Oh, man, that's great. So, what if you want something cheaper. What if you just want a small room, very basic, just a bed, a bathroom, no swimming pool, nothing nice. How much would a hotel like that cost?
Mini: OK, for that, you can pay around a thousand yen. Around nine hundred rupees.
Todd: A thousand yen.
Mini: A thousand yen. A thousand, five hundred yen.
Todd: Ten dollars.
Mini: Mm-hm. That's cheap.
Todd: For one night?
Mini: Yeah.
Todd: Really.
Mini: Mm-hm.
Todd: I wanna go.
Mini: I'm sure.
Todd: That is really, really cheap.
Mini: Yeah, it's very cheap.
Todd: OK, what about things like internet access? So can you get high-speed internet access?
Mini: If you want to stay in a hotel like that, no, you can't get internet access from those kind of hotels, but if you stay in four-star hotel, maybe three-star hotel you can get high-speed internet access.
Todd: OK.
Mini: But you have like centers, internet media centers, kind of stuff. You can pay like fifty rupees and access to the internet. You can do it anytime.
Todd: Right. OK. And just lastly, what about meals? How much do meals cost?
Mini: If you want to go for a nice buffet, maybe around two thousand yen, a thousand, five hundred rupees around.
Todd: Oh, that's actually kind of expensive, isn't it. Two thousand yen.
Mini: But you have everything there. It's really nice. I love it.
Todd: OK. Well, it sounds like a great place to go. Thanks Mini.
Mini: You're welcome.
Daniel: So we're talking about holidays. Is there any really, really good holidays that you remember?
Hana: Well, one of my favourite holidays was when I went to Greece a couple of years ago with my family.
Daniel: Wow, Greece, I've never been there. How is it? Sounds really, really nice.
Hana: Greece is a very beautiful country. The houses are ... everything is so white and the beaches are so beautiful.

Hana: Yes, I went with my mum and dad and brother.
Daniel: And for how long did you go there?
Hana: We went for four days. And when we went there was a big football tournament. And so everybody was so happy and excited. And at night times everybody will start dancing. And so me and my brother, we would join and dance with them.
Daniel: Cool! So did you get to see any of those matches of the tournament?
Hana: Yes, I went to see one match with my dad and I had so much fun.
Daniel: Oh, it sounds really cool, like really nice holidays.

Hana: Yes, it was one of my best holidays.
Todd: Hey, Meg. We are talking about traveling and visiting other countries. What countries have you traveled to?
Meg: I've been to quite a few different countries. For example, Spain, Belize and Indonesia.
Todd: Wow, three different continents.
Meg: Yeah, pretty far apart.
Todd: Wow, that's cool. So Spain, that must be a really nice country. What did you think of Spain?
Meg: Spain is really beautiful. There's a lot of beautiful nature and also some nice cities. While I was there, I lived in a small city called Caceres.
Todd: Oh nice. Are the people really friendly in Spain?
Meg: Yes. Actually, the people are very friendly and very helpful, especially if you're lost.
Todd: Oh, that's great. I hear Spanish food is really, really good.
Meg: Spanish food is delicious. I lived with a Spanish family and my Spanish mom cooked delicious meals every day for lunch. In Spain, seafood is really popular. So I ate a lot of fish and shrimp.
Todd: Oh, I love fish and shrimp.
Meg: Me too.
Todd: Now, Spain is really warm, right?

Todd: Oh yeah? How hot? How hot does it get?
Meg: It got up past 40 Degrees Celsius during the summer.

Todd: Wow.
Meg: Yeah. It was pretty hot.
Todd: Does it rain?
Meg: It does rain. But when I was there in the summer, it didn't rain very often.
Todd: So what about Belize? Belize is a really small country.
Meg: Belize is very small, but it's also hot similar to Spain in the summer.
Todd: Why did you go to Belize?
Meg: I went to Belize on a study trip for school, and I stayed there for about two weeks.
Todd: Okay. Now, does Belize have good food?
Meg: Belize also has good food. There was a family that cooked for us and we had a lot of delicious almost Mexican type food.
Todd: Oh really? So for example, what do you eat? Like, what do people eat in Belize?
Meg: People eat – it's kind of like a taco but flat with a tortilla, and some meat and vegetables on top and some spices that make it really delicious.
Todd: So the last country is Indonesia. When did you go to Indonesia?
Meg: I actually went to Indonesia just last year.
Todd: Oh wow. How long did you stay?
Meg: I only stayed there for about a week.
Todd: Oh yeah? Oh, short trip.
Meg: Yeah, it was a short trip, but I was just visiting some friends there.
Todd: Where did you go?
Meg: I went to Jakarta and Bali.
Todd: Oh, okay. So I hear Bali has really beautiful beaches. Is it true?
Meg: Yeah, it's true. There are a lot of famous and beautiful beaches in Bali.
Todd: Oh, did you surf in Bali?
Meg: I've never surfed before. Usually, when I went to the beach, I just wanted to put my feet in the water.
Todd: Oh yeah. Now, Bali also has very famous scenery on the inside like the rice fields. Did you see the rice fields of Bali?
Meg: No, I didn't see the rice fields. But I did go to some famous historical spots.
Todd: So of the three countries – Spain, Belize and Indonesia – what country was your favorite?
Meg: Maybe Spain was my favorite because I love learning language and it was really nice to stay with my Spanish family.
Todd: Yeah. I could see that. I really want to go to Spain, and I hope to go soon.
Meg: I hope you can go too. It's beautiful.
Todd: So after Laos, where did you go?
Abidemi: After Laos, I flew to Vietnam. And actually I took the bus into Vietnam.
Todd: OK.
Abidemi: Yes. And in Vietnam, I traveled from the north, from Hanoi, to Ho Chi Minh City. But because my time was so short, I could only spend one or two days in each city.
Todd: Ah! What city did you like the most?
Abidemi: I think I prefer Hanoi the most. The food, the street food is amazing. It's a very lively city, lots of motorcycles and traffic so it reminded me of Nigeria where I was born a little bit.
Todd: Oh cool!
Abidemi: Yes.
Todd: And what did you do in Vietnam?
Abidemi: I spent time in Hanoi. I also went to visit Sapa, which has a lot of rice terraces. So these are mountains where they've planted rice fields. So the scenery, the view is really beautiful. And you also get to meet the native people, the local people there. So I enjoyed it. And then from there I went to Hoi An, which is a very historical city, very beautiful night scenery by the river. And then I went to Ho Chi Minh City but I could only spend one night there before leaving for Myanmar.
Todd: OK. And then, how was Myanmar? What did you do there?
Abidemi: Myanmar was my last stop. And I didn't have so much time there but I managed to go—but I managed to visit some of the places I really wanted to see like Yangon, Bagan, and Mandalay. I would say that Bagan was the highlight. They had many temples from the past and just seeing that many of them, it was very impressive.
Todd: That's fantastic.
Abidemi: Yes.
Todd: So what country was your favorite?
Abidemi: It's hard to say. They each have their own good points but I think I would definitely like to visit Thailand again.
Todd: Oh OK. Thailand is such a great place. Anyway, thanks Abidemi.
Abidemi: Thank you, Todd.
Adam: Alright, hi Jin!
Jin: Hi, Adam.
Adam: How are you doing?
Jin: I'm doing good.
Adam: Ah, you're from Nepal right?
Jin: Yes, I am.
Adam: I was thinking about going there. Could you tell me some good places to visit while I'm in Nepal?
Jin: Yeah, sure. It's really nice a nice place. I mean, you should totally come to my country. I would recommend that you should go to a place called Pokhara because that's the most famous tourist site in Nepal. There's a really beautiful lake there, and then I know that you like sports, so then there are so many different kinds of activities like bungee jumping, rafting, kayaking... I don't know. What is it?
Adam: Kayaking?
Jin: Kayaking, yeah! So yeah, I think you'll love it there. That's the best place I would say.
Adam: Oh, cool! How far is that from the capital?
Jin: Ah, you have to take a mini-bus, and it will take you around six hours and you'll be there.
Adam: OK, cool! When's the best time to go there?
Jin: I think during spring would be better.
Adam: Yeah?
Jin: Yeah. It's really nice there, like, and the people are really nice. The food is amazing, and there's a really good nightlife there because people ... like there's ... what do you call it ... pubs, and like live music, so yeah, it's a really fun place to be at night and in the daytime.
Adam: That's great. I love live music. Do you have any like events or festivals that I should go to when I'm in Nepal?
Jin: Actually, in Nepal there's a lot of festivals, but I would recommend you to go there when there's a festival called Holi. It's around February ... March. (Laughter) So yeah, the festival is around March and what we do is we play with colors. We throw colors at each other, and then even throw water balloons. It's really fun, like the whole environment is really colorful, bright and everyone is very happy.
Adam: Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun. I think I've seen pictures of that before. How many days is that celebration?
Jin: It's actually only one day.
Adam: Oh, really?
Jin: Yeah.
Adam: Cool, I really want to go. Anything else you can tell us about Nepal?
Jin: If you like hiking, then Nepal has a lot of mountains. Actually, Mt. Everest is in Nepal so you can even try going there.
Adam: Wow, that would be amazing. I really look forward to going there. Thank you so much for your time today.
Jin: Sure anytime!
Hana: So, you're from Chile?
Daniel: Yeah, that's right.
Hana: If I ever travel to Chile, do you have any tips?
Daniel: Well yeah, there are a lot of things that you should do in Chile and also a lot of things that you shouldn't do in Chile.
Hana: Oh! For example?
Daniel: Well I would definitely recommend to try Chilean food, especially in the small shops that we have, like in every street. If you go to like big restaurants, it's not going to be really authentic. So I think you should try small shops, in every street. Also if you're interested in nature, well you know, Chile has really long mountains, right. And they're beautiful, especially if you go in winter, you can go skiing and it's not far, it's about like two hours from like anywhere. So that's really cool. You should definitely do that. Also one thing, remember that it's Latin America, so you have to take care of your belongings. A lot of my friends have lost stuff there. But if you pay attention, it's going to be fine, just don't be too obvious that you're a tourist, and that's going to be alright. And probably lastly, I think you can see a lot of history there, our history, like the Indians we had before the Spanish came, and also the mix between the Spanish and those Indians.
Hana: Is there anything I shouldn't do?
Daniel: Well, I wouldn't really recommend you to take public buses, they're not very safe, so don't do it. Metro is much better, it's cleaner, it's faster and you can get pretty much anywhere in the city, so you shouldn't take buses. And also you should avoid downtown during night, night time, it's quite dangerous I think as any other big city. It is like any other city in the world, it's kind of dangerous when you go downtown at night time. So I think those would be my tips for you.
Hana: I see, I'll keep that in mind, thank you.
Daniel: You're welcome.
Widuri: Now, can you tell me more about another famous place in Sri Lanka?
Danu: Sure. As I mentioned before, Sri Lanka is a beautiful island.
Widuri: Yes.
Danu: So Tooth Relic and the city of Kandy is right in the middle of Sri Lanka.
Widuri: Oh, I see.
Danu: If you go to the coastal area, there are so many beautiful beaches.
Widuri: Wow.
Danu: And I will talk about the place called Marble Beach.
Widuri: Marble Beach.
Danu: Why do you think we call it the Marble Beach?
Widuri: Marble Beach. Maybe because the sands look like marble?
Danu: Exactly. When you get in the sea, the sea bed looks like exactly like marble.
Widuri: Wow.
Danu: It's so blue, it shines when the sun is bright. You can see even from far away the blue sea bed of Marble Beach.
Widuri: Wow.
Danu: And the best thing about the Marble Beach is for about 1 kilometer, the depth of water is the same. It's really, really shallow.
Widuri: Oh yeah?
Danu: So nobody drowns if you swim in Marble Beach. You can swim even if you cannot swim.
Widuri: Oh really?
Danu: Yes. And since Sri Lanka is a tropical country, if it is not the rainy season, Marble Beach will be filled with people from outside Sri Lanka as well as with the people from Sri Lanka, local people and foreign people because tourists, they love to do sun bathing.
Widuri: Yeah, they are. Have you visited that Marble Beach?
Danu: Yes, so many times. Usually, my friends and we do road trips to this place because the road to Marble Beach is very beautiful and especially, there is no police in this area so you can drive freely.
Widuri: Oh I see. So you mentioned that Kandy is in the middle of Sri Lanka and this one is in the southern part.
Danu: No. Kandy is in the central part of Sri Lanka and Marble Beach in northeastern part of Sri Lanka.
Widuri: Is it far?
Danu: It is roughly 170 kilometers from my city.
Widuri: Oh, not so far. Interesting. Any other famous place near those two places?
Danu: Oh yes, sure. Near Marble Beach, there's another Hindu temple.
Widuri: Okay.
Danu: And the landscape of this temple is very interesting because in Sri Lanka, usually, around the beach, around the coastal area, there are no highlands or mountains. But this exact Hindu temple is situated on a little mountain right next to Marble Beach. And if you look down from the Hindu temple, it's like a cliff. It's like a straight fall into the water.
Widuri: Wow.
Danu: So there had been people jumping off from here and trying to suicide as well.
Widuri: Oh really?
Danu: As an offering to the god.
Widuri: Wow.
Danu: Yeah.
Widuri: That's a bit scary. But it's so interesting. So near that Marble Beach, we have the beautiful cliff plus the Hindu temple.
Danu: That's true.
Widuri: Very interesting. Wow, I definitely want to go there. I will stay at your house and then we go to both...
Danu: Temple of the Tooth Relic...
Widuri: Yes, and then...
Danu: And the Marble Beach.
Widuri: The Marble Beach and then to the Hindu temple.
Danu: Definitely, I'll be your guide.
Widuri: Oh thank you, Danu.
Danu: Thank you, Widuri.
Lupe: My mom is actually interested in going to Vegas. She's never been there and she knows you and I have been there quite a few times, so she was wondering maybe if we could give her some do's and don'ts about going to Vegas because she's never been there and I sort of explained to her some of the good things about Vegas and some of the things she shouldn't do, but I think I'm missing a few things. What do you think?
Kara: Well, I think the most important thing about Las Vegas is to wear comfortable shoes. You do so much walking there it's ridiculous so I think to wear flat comfortable shoes, tennis shoes, whatever you're most comfortable in. I've had many days or nights with blisters all over my feet, so that's the number one 'do': wear comfortable shoes.
Lupe: That's true. I did forget about that just because, you know, staying there either you take a cab everywhere, but most people want to do sightseeing and looking at the different hotels, it's a really beautiful place so she will be doing a lot of walking, so I'll definitely keep that in mind and let her know.
Kara: Another thing I would say is to wear comfortable clothing because when you walk into the casino, if you go in the summer, it's extremely warm there: a hundred degrees or more, and even in the middle of the night it's still that warm outside, but when you walk into the casinos, they have the air-conditioning set at seventy degrees, so outside you get really, really warm and then inside you start getting really cold, so it's good to dress in layers and to be comfortable whatever you're wearing.
Lupe: And remember the first time you and I went, I did think it was a bit too long of a trip so maybe I should tell her to keep it short because it can get really expensive after a few days.
Kara: Yeah, Vegas isn't a place you wanna be more than three days. You've had a enough gambling, enough shows, enough sightseeing, it's about time to head home, so I would say to keep it short. It's close enough, you can always go back, but...
Lupe: And definitely bring enough money because after being there for four days the last time we were there, we did run out of money. So I should definitely tell her that.
Kara: That we did but your mom doesn't shop as much as us, so I think she'll do OK as long as she stays away from the slot machines.
Todd: Keiko, my family is coming to Japan to see me and it's the first time they've been to Japan. What do you recommend? Like what should we see? They are going to be in Tokyo for one week.
Keiko: OK. Do they want to go outside of Tokyo or do they want to stay in Tokyo?
Todd: I think they would like to do one day, a one-day trip outside and then maybe spend the rest of the time in Tokyo.
Keiko: OK, I think, a lot of people say that Tokyo is not really Japan, you have to go outside of Tokyo to really see Japan because Tokyo is like New York in the states, but I don't think it's true because if you go to downtown in Tokyo you can see a lot of traditional old things for example if you go to places like Asakusa, but in the back streets you can see these old people who grew up in that area, you know doing their own thing in their own little ways and I think Tokyo's quite interesting because you can see, like example, places like Asakusa, you can see on the one side of the street, you can see cosmopolitan, you know, kind of buildings, new buildings and on the other side of the street you can see the old little traditional buildings or the cultures. You can kind of compare at the same time, so I recommend the places like the downtown in Tokyo, Asakusa.
Todd: How about, what city would you recommend besides Tokyo?
Keiko: Besides Tokyo, my favorite — is it just a one-day trip?
Todd: Let's say two days.
Keiko: Two days. Well, if you really had a chance to go really far away, I recommend Shikoku because it's, it has a really nice nature.
Keiko: It's a prefectural Shikoku area. It has four prefectures. That's why it's called Shikoku, four countries. It used to be four different countries and you can actually take a bus tour around the four prefectures and then you can see those little small reserved villages between the prefectures.
Todd: So Shikoku, huh?
Keiko: Shikoku is really nice but you have to fly there so if you only have two days, I recommend you go to maybe Kamakura. You can see the shrines and and temples and Buddha.
Todd: So Kamakura. And how far is Kamakura from Tokyo?
Keiko: About 2 hours from on the train.
Todd: That's not too long.
Keiko: It's not too long and then you can down even further south to Hakone and you can go to a lot of different hot springs.
Todd: Actually, I'm thinking of taking family to Hakone to hot springs but I worry about the prices. How much would a ryokan, a Japanese hotel cost?
Keiko: About maybe 10,000 yen to 20,000 yen per person.
Todd: Oh really?
Keiko: Yeah.
Todd: So that's about between a hundred and two hundred U.S. dollars. That's not too much.
Keiko: No, but I mean it can go higher than 20,000 yen. It can always go higher.
Todd: Right. I got to be careful.
Keiko: Yeah, but you could also find a place between 10,000 yen and 20,000 yen range.
Todd: OK, and what — if they could try three Japanese foods, what Japanese foods would you recommend?
Keiko: I recommend sashimi, the raw fish, and I recommend kani-miso, which is the brain of the crab. That's a very kind of, very special kind of a treatment for the guests.
Todd: Kani-miso.
Keiko: Kani-miso. Because it's so tiny. The brain of the crab is so tiny, and you can't get so much out of one crab so it's quite expensive and you put that on the cracker, so you put that on the rice.
Todd: Wow! Crab brains.
Keiko: Yeah, crab brains, and if you go to Hakone, it's by the sea so, it's close to the sea so you can get a lot of seafood and I also recommend natto just to see their reaction.
Todd: Right, ok, thanks a lot, Keiko.
Keiko: Sure.
